Spread the Truth

by Joyce on Jan.31, 2009

Last night I went to a little concert where the most gifted lyricist was preforming. His performance was amazing and I must say that if I could see this man live again I would. Who might I be referring to you ask?

K’naan.

This Somalian musician is truly awesome and I recommend you all go check out his albums and go support him.
The first song that I ever heard by K’naan was soobax back in 2006. When I heard that he was coming to Ottawa I immediately knew that I wanted to see this man spit his truth live.

So, obviously my weekend banger is going to be inspired by my experience last night. The song is called in the beginning.

Relax and listen to the wise words and stories that the dusty foot philosopher has chose to share with you.

Other recommended songs by K’naan
If rap gets jealous
What’s Hardcore?
ABC’s

…You know what? Just check out his entire album, seriously.

Peace & Love.

IT FEELS GOOD TO MOVE!!!

by DMack on Jan.30, 2009

i don’t mind stealing pound cake
from the mouth of a poisonous brown snake
kill it, skin it, turn it into boots
when i’m finished, fancy camera shoot

Truer words were never spoken. This is an important weekend for certain boys! Some of us are moving this weekend! …to a different city! Step 1 is to post some appropriately raw beats to make everybody move in one way or another.

I think I’ll warm things up (as I often do) with Tiga – You Gonna Want Me, from the album SEXOR, which is every bit as poignant today as it was in 2006.

Idle Warship – Get By (live) <-- SO GOOD Hot Chocolate – Put Your Love In Me
Asher Roth – I Love College (live)

GOODBYE, NANAIMO! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!

VICTORIA, I’M COMIN’ FOR YOU!
Langdon Auger – Too Many Dudes

Obligatory song about moving:
N.E.R.D. – She Wants to Move (Mac & Toolz remix)
I was going to post that Reel 2 Reel song, “I like to move it”, but I honestly can’t even listen to that anymore. It makes me cringe.

Keep warm!

out of your leauge

by Annie on Jan.25, 2009

Although the beginning of this song sounds suspiciously like that awful laffy taffy song, (for refernce: http://www.imeem.com/people/ulDiI/music/h6nNT0tY/d4l_laffy_taffy/)it’s better. Well at least I think so. During this freezing cold weekend in Toronto I hope everyone is giving some true affection to the ones they love.

True Affection – The Blow

Bonus track! Personally I dislike Dallas Green and his newly married wife (you know who she is, that ditzy much music “host”) even more, but I can’t help but think that this song of his is really sweet.

P.S. I think he looks like a total jerk with those old man glasses of his…I don’t care if they’re prescription of not.

Exploding Spices

by Joyce on Jan.24, 2009

This weekend definitely needs to be laid back. I have so much things that need to get done that I have to keep myself calm and collected. Slow and steady( keep your jokes to yourself Duncan). But we still have to keep the weekend spicy nonetheless.

I came across this song some time ago and found myself listening to it throughout the week. The song is called Explode by Uh Huh her ( I love their name haha ). This banger is just the right dash of mild spice for the weekend.

I must also add that I really like the music video for the song too.

Banging video + Banging song = kick-ass combo

For your consideration, a mild harmonica spice
Just a Boy – Angus and Julia Stone

Finally, once everything is done you’re going to need that extra boost of hot spices.

End the weekend with a soul clap,
Mission Accomplished.

Wissssconsin

by Annie on Jan.17, 2009

Winter is still here in full blast, I know this personally because for the past few days I’ve been wearing TWO pairs of socks and TWO pairs of pants to school. This song reminds me of a nice quiet Wisconsin winter morning…not that I’ve been to Wisconsin. But I’m sure it’s a lovely place, just like this song by Brightblack Morning Light. BTW I highly suggest you don’t watch this video with your mother in the room. AHEM =)

Resurrection…Sorta

by Joyce on Jan.16, 2009

Wow, these have been some of the coldest days of winter here in Ottawa.

There’s an icebox where my car use to be.

On a more amusing note: You know when you hear a song a while back and don’t think much of it at the time? Then, faith intervenes and makes you listen to the song again for some divine reason. Suddenly, while you’re shivering and drinking hot chocolate, you realize that you have a weekend banger on your hands?
Ya, me too.

I stumbled across the song black and gold by Sam Sparro some time back in early 08 and kind of listened to it once and that’s pretty much where the story ends.
I think it was because I was only listening to metal at that point…good times.

Anyways, long story short. I re-stumbled upon the song this week and kept thinking to myself ” where have I heard this before? This is a fine piece of jam.”

Which brings us to this very moment.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Ben, your weekend banger.

are you straight or are you gay?

by Annie on Jan.12, 2009

Just in time to post, the weekend isn’t over just yet. I never know what to post on here so I just end up posting songs I like aaaand I’m sure everyone hates my choices. But whatever, you can just hate ME but not Belle and Sebastian.

BTW, good job to either Duncan or Joyce (or both!) for revamping this site. It looks great :)

CUZ THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE!!!

by DMack on Jan.09, 2009

I’ve got to LEAVE TOWN for a few days until things cool off. With not a moment to spare, I’m still mashing out a banger post so everyone can have a comfortable weekend.

This week you can enjoy a delicious helping of “Party Like Us” by AC Slater. Go on and tuck your shirt into your jeans and swing your jheri curl all over the *bass!*. I could only find that track on hypemachine because I’m in a RUSH, but here’s Party Like Us (Udachi remix) in case you’re just skimming the page for streaming music:

and some bonus tasties:
AC Slater on myspace
Thematically linked, but not exactly a banger. At least not by my standards….

I feel like I should add:

The new Dr.-Dre-produced Eminem track sucksssss. The one with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. I don’t like Eminem or 50 cent at all anyway, but maaaan. What a STINKER. I’m talking about “Crack a bottle”, the hook is so irritating I’m not even going to link to it. FIND IT YOURSELF, BEN. Anyway let’s not talk about what’s not good. There’s no room for hate between friday and monday.
