Discoveries…and sweat

by Joyce on Jul.31, 2009

Ottawa has had record breaking rain this month but the sun has finally come out and I’m sweating as I type this post. But I’m not gonna complain about the heat because Duncan is getting forest fires.

Real talk: I’ve been listening to a lot of folk this week. The Folk Festival is starting up soon here in Ottawa and I’m quite excited to get myself a Ukulele from the artisan tents over there. They custom make them for you! (from what I hear)…

MOVING ALONG but keeping the theme of Folk music,I love the intro to Beirut‘s My Wife, Lost in the Wild. There’s actually a funny story on how I discovered Beirut a couple of years ago…

The story starts about 2 years ago when I heard about this metal band coming out of Lebanon. Clearly interested I started doing my research in trying to find the bands name so that I could listen to these guys but accidentally found Beirut(the band) in the process with his song Postcards from Italy. I did however eventually find the metal band I was looking for to begin with (BLooD InK) but ended up finding another treasure in the process :) . The end.

Never for money, always for love

by Joyce on Jul.27, 2009

It’s Monday and I’m posting. Sometimes I just can’t help it because we have a banger on our hands!

Miles Fisher‘s cover of the Talking Heads song This Must Be The Place is so good! I’m totally digging his unique take on the song. The music video for the song is also very well done. The video is pretty much a scene for scene adaptation of the classic American Psycho film and I must say, Fisher pulls off Christian Bale quite well. Love it.

You can download this song as well as his entire EP here.

You can listen to the original Talking Heads track here.

I’ve missed ya’ll! MUAH

by Joyce on Jul.25, 2009

WHOA, where have I been right?

Now i’ve missed a few posts which is why this one is going to be a lil long to make up for lost time. But I do have a valid excuse for my absence: The Blues Fest…that and I’ve been really tired.

I pretty much attended all 12 days of the awesome festival here in Ottawa and came across a lot of talent that I’d like to share. Some were already favorites while some were completely new to me, which is why I love festival there’s just so much talent to showcase and discover!
Here are SOME(there was way more: perhaps another post?) of my favorite performances…

Fresh out of Ontario comes The Arkells with their song the Ballad of Hugo Chavez. This is such a fun song to sing in the car. They were really good live too.

Now you might remember me posting Mr Hurricane by BEAST on the Canada day post. Well these guys are making sure they get noticed, which they should, cause they played right before KISS took the big stage at the festival.

Out of Control – BEAST [video]

I was so excited when I heard CAKE was coming! loved them.

CAKE – NEVER THERE [mp3]

Here’s the thing alright, girl talk has these awesome toilet paper dispensers at his shows. Well at least at the festival he did and all I have to say to Gillis is that he should give me one. Oh and, you were awesome.

GIRL TALK – Here’s the thing [mp3]

What I loved about Woodhands is that their bio info was this:

Woodhands is dirty electronic music. According to their myspace site, they’re interested in emotional, sweaty dance floors. They want to make you cry while you’re having sex, and it’ll be the best damn sex of your life . . . and you’ll be dancing.

Woodhands – I Wasn’t Made For Fighting [mp3]

I volunteered at the info booth so whenever someone would ask me ‘ Hey, what kind of music are the woodhands? I’d just say ‘ Oh, here’s the Bluesfest pamphlet, just read their bio ;)

LESS TALK MORE SONGS

HOLY FUCK – Royal Gregory [mp3 via Zshare]

Iron and Wine – Boy with a coin [Youtube]

The National – Mistaken for Strangers [mp3 via Zshare]

So I here this is the 101th post? EXCITING! Champagne anyone?

I THINK I MIGHT RUN FOR MAYOR!!!

by DMack on Jul.25, 2009

…because I feel so good! Hi! This week I picked up the new mc chris record, “Part Six, Part Two“. If you haven’t been following the gripping narrative in his past few albums: chris was shot and killed, became a zombie, and was banished to hell where he’s currently participating in a gameshow. The last song on Part Two is called Japanese Maid, and it’s a touching club ballad about his fantasy housekeeper / sex slave.

Download mc chris – Japanese Maid

It’s sooooo embarrassing to like mc chris, but I’ll tell you without an ounce of shame that the last track on the album is a skit where a guy is just saying names for 6 and a half minutes, and it made me laugh like an idiot.

THE JANITORIAL STAFF AND THEIR MOTHERS

Mr. Hudson – White Lies – Straight No Chaser out Oct. 5!

Sharam – She Came Along (Doorly remix) (feat. Kid Cudi) – word to Chanelle Fiddy

Mastodon – Oblivion (Troublemaker remix) – I didn’t think much of Crack the Skye when I heard it, but this is fresh. Word to Hypebeast

Update: By the way, “Feelin’ so good, I think I might run for mayor” is a lyric from the Pac Div song Mayor, which is on their Church League Champions record which you can download for free HERE.

WELL NANG BEATS!

by DMack on Jul.18, 2009

I wasn’t going to post anything tonight, but then I looked into those big internet puppydog eyes and I couldn’t say no. As promised, here’s some disgusting bass. Some filthy, grimy, utterly raunchy bass. Some bass that will make your neighbours think you have a dumptruck idling in your room.

The first thang is called Havoc, and it’s by Datsik. I don’t know anything about the artist at this point but I’ve heard a few tracks and it’s some very sharp dubstep.

Also worth checking out is a cut off of “New Age Grime”, the new album by Maniac. This track is called Captain, and I don’t know how to describe it so I’ll say it’s like a cross between “Little People Big World” and “Destroyed in Seconds”. HAH, Think about it.

I’m going to go find something else to do. Think good thoughts, thrive and stay regular.

MAKE NO MISTAKE!!

by DMack on Jul.10, 2009

Well met, fam! I’ve got kind of a creepy video for you to check out this week. This is the brand new Blitzen Trapper video for Black River Killer.  The video suits the song perfectly, a pretty neat style and an eerie atmosphere throughout.

I was quiet last weekend because I spent basically the whole week listening to podcasts. I thought about posting Jay-Z’s new big one, or digging into the archives and sharing some classics but I didn’t find the time. On a personal note, my whole life is ridiculous! Definitely do check out the new Jay-Z though, if you haven’t already. Jay-Z – Death of Autotune (with awesome clarinet-infused beat production by No I.D.)

This time last year, I was driving all over the place looking for someone to pay me to write code for them. I want to share a record I was playing in my car at the time. It’s called Polaris, by a group called EXXASENS. They’re either from Spain, or some crazy islands off the coast of Australia – I have no idea. The album is sort of instrumental/progressive/post-metal-ish blend, and a few tracks have some vocals in Spanish. It’s free to download and I think you’ll like it, so download EXXASENS – Polaris tonight. This is life-in-transition music! This is sun-hanging-low-in-the-sky, revealing-itself-from-behind-the-trees-in-time-with-the-crescendo music!

I picked up the new album by Maniac this week, so expect some wobbly, wobby, wobbly wobbly wobbly bass next week.

I’m just sitting on the shelf

by Annie on Jul.10, 2009

It’s been awhile friends, I’ve been busy making teeth.

There are tons of actors/actresses turn singers and some are hits while most are misses. I was a little skeptical at first but now I think Zooey Deschanel has such a unique voice that really grows on you.  Zooey Deschanel makes up 50% of She and Him while the other half is M.Ward. Lookout for these 2, big things are coming their way.

Speaking of gorgeous and talented ladies, Little Boots is another artist on the rise and someone to lookout for. Here is her song Remedy:

Have a great weekend everyone :)
