People Jam is a Japanese band that almost defies classification. You could call them a rock/electro/garage/funk jamband, but even then you’d probably be selling them short on their genre-smashing prowess.
PeopleJam – Wake Up People
People Jam formed in 2005, and they’re just about to release their first full-length. “Dirty Groove” runs for 74 minutes – my guess is it encompasses all of their releases to date, or at least as many as they could fit onto a CD – and has a bit of something for everyone. I love a band that shirks any kind of style label, and People Jam definitely do that with Dirty Groove. They explore a ton of different styles from one track to the next, from electro-funky Nirvana to shoegazey 7-minute instrumental Dead Livestock. The thread that binds the album together is their self-described “exploding dance groove”, a fun-ass energy that’s detectable in every track as the heavily-filtered vocals warble and echo over People Jam’s arsenal of instruments. I’d recommend this album as something new to check out for any fans of POLYSICS or Cubismo Grafico Five.
Dirty Groove is available May 11th. They’ve got more videos and some free mp3s to check out on their site.
