Death Grips sells out!

by on Feb.29, 2012

Nah. Not really, but it’s a key phrase I’m seeing everywhere in the wake of news that Sacramento avant-hiphop group Death Grips has signed with Sony/Epic Records. They announced the news alongside a new video for Get Got, and comments sections knee-jerked like there’s no tomorrow. They got a VEVO page? Awwww SHIT. Beginning of the end!

Remember when JJ didn’t even have a Wikipedia page, then they had one but nobody even knew their real names? Same deal with Death Grips. Until recently, I didn’t know MC Ride’s real name was Stefan or whatever. Prior to that, I didn’t know he was even called MC Ride.  I absolutely agree that it’s more fun to be into a band that people describe as “enigmatic” or “reclusive”, but that can’t last forever. Now JJ’s all over the place but they stay doin’ their thing!  They can’t tour and rock a show in my city if nobody knows how to get a hold of them.

Death grips has TWO albums slated for a 2012 release. The first one, called “The Money Store” is due out April 24 on the aforementioned Epic label. It’s too early to tell if my favourite new act of 2011 will get ruined by money like every videogame company has done. Who knows if they’ll re-release Ex-Military, but this time it’ll cost money and have fewer tracks (Drake, Frank Ocean).

With that said, remember the sample at the start of Beware: “He come to me with money in his hand…"

Portland’s Chromatics explore a Neil Young tune on their new album “Kill for Love”. I PREFER IT TO THE ORIGINAL, YEAH DEAL WITH IT.

MIA bringin’ it back with “Bad Girls”

by on Feb.05, 2012

Remember when you were in school and cats was bumpin’ Arular and you couldn’t get enough Saudi Arabian hoon videos on that brand new Youtube website? So does Romain Gavras, who previously directed MIA’s awesome Born Free video. Gavras and MIA have collaborated again on an awesome video for her new single, Bad Girls, which is off the 2010 Vicki Leekx mixtape.

Imperial Teen Runaways

by on Feb.03, 2012

Imperial Teen‘s Runaway is a really catch tune! The video has old fashioned cameras and muted colors and all that shit the kids are into these days, so it’s bound to be a hit!

SALEM finna make you vomit!

by on Feb.01, 2012

Jack from Salem‘s Twitter account is as scary and enigmatic as it is goofy and sincere. When he isn’t selflessly sending good vibes, he occasionally links to some new or obscure work from his band. The latest (new?) development is called Vomit, and I really digz it. It’s a clap-heavy, droning drag peace in the vein of FROST (which, you might recall, was my favorite song of 2010).
