THERE’S PARTY EVERYWHERE!!!!

by DMack on Jun.06, 2010

Catching up on a few dancefloor-destroyers that I haven’t yet posted. This is Scooter – The Sound Above My Hair.

I love how the global hardstyle community treats their cheesy craft with the seriousness of a Shakespearean theatre group.

WHEN I’M IN THE CLUB…. !!

by DMack on Jun.03, 2010

Joakim from JJ is awesome. In these live videos from SXSW 2010, he just stands in one spot on the stage and doesn’t do anything but sway back and forth, and occasionally smoke a cigarette.

JJ – Ecstasy (live @ SXSW 2010)

Dude looks like Val Kilmer’s character from HEAT, so he’s forever in my good books based on that alone.

JJ – My Way (live @ SXSW 2010)

Is it not cool to call it SXSW 2010 anymore? Do we have to start call it "South-By" now? I hope not.

ZOMBIE ATTACK!!

by DMack on May.29, 2010

Rifoki is a hardcore punk project from Steve Aoki and Bobby Rifo from The Bloody Beetroots. The collaboration brings them back to their roots in hardcore punk rock. Not at all surprising when you consider they both produce some of the hardest electro out there. Here’s their first video:

Rifoki – Zombie Attack

They’ve got a 5 track EP called “Sperm Donor”, out now on Dim Mak.

UP FROM BELOW!!!

by DMack on May.16, 2010

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have a new single called Home. The song comes from their 2009 debut, “Up From Below”, which is a very cool record.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros "Home" from Edward Sharpe on Vimeo.

Up From Below begins as a competent, western-flavoured folk rock album where you might catch the odd whiff of rockabilly in the air, but it really gets going about half way through when you get to Home.  The lyrics “Alabama, Arkansas / I do love my ma and pa"…” signal a transformation into a full-on cowboy rock opera that wouldn’t seem out of place scoring some kind of psychedelic old-west epic. The songs in the second half of the album feel like lonesome cowboy riding music, and conjure up images of sweeping desert plains with surreal colors in the sky. Think Django, mixed with that Simpsons episode where Homer hallucinates from eating Chili. If that piques your interest, then I’ve got some good news for you:

“SALVO!” is a 12-part music video series by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros that tells the story of Edward, a curiously Jesus-looking fugitive, and his hallucinatory adventures in the desert. So far only 2 of the 12 planned episodes have been released, so I’m anxiously awaiting the next chapter. Check SALVO! out on Youtube.

BABYFATHER

by DMack on May.07, 2010

Have you guys seen the new Sade video yet? Babyfather is the latest single from this year’s “Soldier of Love”, which I’ve got no qualms declaring as one of 2010’s best albums. I’M CALLING IT!

Sade’s supposed to be in her 50s? I think we can all agree: Daaaaaamn.

SWEET!

by DMack on May.04, 2010

Rai Knight has some new tracks out, courtesy of FrontStreet Records. Sweet Anna Mae is about how Rai is ready to share her musical gift with the world.

And the other track is called Pied Piper. Something I really like about these tracks is the combination of silky smooth vocals with these bass lines that boom surprisingly hard.

COCO DRUNK!!

by DMack on May.02, 2010

Montreal’s Ghislain Poirier was recently in Victoria as part of his Canadian tour to promote his new album, “Running High”. The new album combines work from his last few EP releases, as well as some new stuff. Poirier has been blending dancehall, hiphop and all kinds of tropical riddims for a while now; he was already pretty well established when I first heard him on the Chocolate Swim compilation (which is no longer available at the Adult Swim site, so never MIND.)

The video for Coco Drunk is interesting, it follows a day in the life of someone wearing a camera in their shoe. A shoe camera isn’t something you see every day, unless you’re a spy or some kind of pervert!
