I’ve long suspected that Bearbot was a stone cold killa, but this week some new evidence emerged that straight up confirms it. Her new EP, “Evocation”, dropped as a free download on her website a couple days ago and it’s been on a killing spree ever since.

The new collection features 10 tracks, a few of which had previously been previewed on Bearbot’s Facebook page. There are mashups of artists including Ratatat, The Beastie Boys, Weezy and MIA that border on pure genius, and you should expect nothing less, but this EP doesn’t stop there. More than just a mashup album, Evocation shows off some original instrumentation where you’d expect it to take a back seat behind the mixes. In Evocation, you hear a few more forays into dubstep/wobbly bass that were hinted at on tracks like Super Nova, Type I on her previous release. Hustle & Destroy opens with a minute and a half of filthy skank-time before Bearbot’s signature gunshot kicks it into a bouncy electro jam. Bassman starts up with the intro from Rusko’s “Hold On”, with Lil Wayne announcing “I’m Baaaaack!”; and Evocation is the perfect succession to “The Life Cycle of a Star”, which came out earlier this year. My one complaint would be about the too-often recycled samples. Bearbot loves her Biggie and Daft Punk, and it shows. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (in fact it’s an awesome thing), but a few of the samples are recognizable from earlier releases. To be fair, the samples are being used in new and creative ways every time, and I suppose Bearbot’s mixtapes represent a work-in-progress, but they stand up as bangers in their own right and I listen to them a lot. It’s hardly an issue, though. Certainly not enough to prevent the MURDER.

BEARBOT!!

Bearbot is a talented remix/mashup DJ and producer from New York. I heard her music for the first time last summer and instantly became a huge fan. She’s joining Bankai on his epic “Bankai vs. Canada” tour, so I’ll be in Langley, sweating to her genius mixes on Feb. 20th.

This is Bearbot – We Don’t Give a FUCK.
