Discoveries…and sweat

by Joyce on Jul.31, 2009

Ottawa has had record breaking rain this month but the sun has finally come out and I’m sweating as I type this post. But I’m not gonna complain about the heat because Duncan is getting forest fires.

Real talk: I’ve been listening to a lot of folk this week. The Folk Festival is starting up soon here in Ottawa and I’m quite excited to get myself a Ukulele from the artisan tents over there. They custom make them for you! (from what I hear)…

MOVING ALONG but keeping the theme of Folk music,I love the intro to Beirut‘s My Wife, Lost in the Wild. There’s actually a funny story on how I discovered Beirut a couple of years ago…

The story starts about 2 years ago when I heard about this metal band coming out of Lebanon. Clearly interested I started doing my research in trying to find the bands name so that I could listen to these guys but accidentally found Beirut(the band) in the process with his song Postcards from Italy. I did however eventually find the metal band I was looking for to begin with (BLooD InK) but ended up finding another treasure in the process :) . The end.

I’ve missed ya’ll! MUAH

by Joyce on Jul.25, 2009

WHOA, where have I been right?

Now i’ve missed a few posts which is why this one is going to be a lil long to make up for lost time. But I do have a valid excuse for my absence: The Blues Fest…that and I’ve been really tired.

I pretty much attended all 12 days of the awesome festival here in Ottawa and came across a lot of talent that I’d like to share. Some were already favorites while some were completely new to me, which is why I love festival there’s just so much talent to showcase and discover!
Here are SOME(there was way more: perhaps another post?) of my favorite performances…

Fresh out of Ontario comes The Arkells with their song the Ballad of Hugo Chavez. This is such a fun song to sing in the car. They were really good live too.

Now you might remember me posting Mr Hurricane by BEAST on the Canada day post. Well these guys are making sure they get noticed, which they should, cause they played right before KISS took the big stage at the festival.

Out of Control – BEAST [video]

I was so excited when I heard CAKE was coming! loved them.

CAKE – NEVER THERE [mp3]

Here’s the thing alright, girl talk has these awesome toilet paper dispensers at his shows. Well at least at the festival he did and all I have to say to Gillis is that he should give me one. Oh and, you were awesome.

GIRL TALK – Here’s the thing [mp3]

What I loved about Woodhands is that their bio info was this:

Woodhands is dirty electronic music. According to their myspace site, they’re interested in emotional, sweaty dance floors. They want to make you cry while you’re having sex, and it’ll be the best damn sex of your life . . . and you’ll be dancing.

Woodhands – I Wasn’t Made For Fighting [mp3]

I volunteered at the info booth so whenever someone would ask me ‘ Hey, what kind of music are the woodhands? I’d just say ‘ Oh, here’s the Bluesfest pamphlet, just read their bio ;)

LESS TALK MORE SONGS
