I came across this video by accident this week while searching for a particular White Ring track. Waka Flocka’s repetitive-ass refrains are just begging to be sampled and witched up with some echo effects.

I’ve been listening to a lot of drag music lately.

White Ring – Roses

Also known as “haunted house” or ”witch house”, I’ve seen drag records most aptly described as “screwgaze” (a portmanteau of shoegaze and screwed/chopped). Groups like SALEM and oOoOO bring a really brilliant sound; familiar 808s suspended among a dark, incongruous droning. Imagine a styrofoam cup with a voodoo doll in it. The southern hiphop / DJ Screw influence is much more apparent on certain tracks, but it’s all intriguing.
